Oncology Massage Essentials - April 9 -11, 2021

24 CEs, Classroom and Hands-on practice (Greenville, SC) - Limited to 8 Students due to social distance restrictions.

Depending on the percentage of COVID cases in April,  face masks may be required.

This course is for the practicing massage therapist to learn how to work safely and effectively with a client who has had a diagnosis of cancer. The class will cover how to modify a massage to address safely and comfort concerns before, during, and after treatment, including late-term effects of treatment.

The class is a combination of lecture, class participation, and hands-on experience including a clinic on the last day with cancer survivors or peer-to-peer massages incorporating the information and modifications to massage presented in the first two days. At the conclusion of the course, the massage therapist will have the minimum requirements to apply to the Society for Oncology Massage as a Preferred Practitioner.  Both Lucy Allen and Kathy Hallman are Recognized Education Providers (REPs) with S4OM.

Prerequisite: Licensed Massage Therapist (provide State and Lic Number). Proof of professional liability insurance

15 CEs, Classroom and Hands-on practice

This course is for the massage therapist who has already completed a foundation class in Oncology Massage (at least 24 CE and approved by Society for Oncology Massage) and would like to deepen their learning through application in the Infusion Center. The class will review the information from the foundation course, address additional concerns for working in the hospital and outpatient infusion environment, and teach hands-on techniques for hand and foot massage in the Infusion Center. Approximately half of the class will be hands-on practice in the outpatient clinic.

Oncology Massage Basics - Oct. 5

This course is for the practicing massage therapist to learn the basics of cancer, cancer treatment and the short and long-term side effects. It covers how to work safely and effectively with a client who has had a diagnosis of cancer. The class will cover a few ways to modify a massage to address safely and comfort concerns before, during and after treatment and will also provide information on when to refer a client to a specialist rather than risk harm. This class will be a combination of lecture, class participation, and hands-on practice. It covers much of the same material as the 24hr CE Oncology Massage Essentials class, but does not include a clinic with cancer survivors or provide sufficient hours or practice to quality as a Preferred Practitioner with the Society for Oncology Massage.

Oncology Massage of the Carolinas is pleased to partner with Upstate AHEC for this class.  Registration is through their site, and provides a significant discount for massage therapists and RNs interested in learning more about Oncology Massage.
